Crochet a Cosy Balloon Sleeve Cardigan

The raglan party continues! This time it is a cosy balloon sleeve cardigan that will be perfect for fall and complement the other raglan patterns released in the past few months: the Lime Berry Cardigan and the Lumous Puff Sleeve Sweater and Tee.

The Cherry Blossom Wrap Cardigan is a cosy, comfortable, elegant wrap cardigan with lovely balloon sleeves to keep you warm all year around.

Story

I’ve always wanted to own a wrap cardigan. It has been one of those dream items to add to my closet. Which also mean I’ve been really picky on how it should look. I’ve found many great versions in stores, but since I am more of making them myself I had to try.

It is one of those patterns I’ve had in my head for months, if not a year before getting started. It has slowly taken form and one day I found myself with the perfect yarn in my hands to get started.

I’ll tell you all about my designing process in a future blog post. But I can tell it often includes a lot of trial and error. It often takes a few tries to get it exactly how you’ve pictured it in your mind and this design is not an exception.

What I like the most about this design myself is that most of it was made in the beginning of June while at the in-laws summer cabin in the middle of the forest by a lake. It was still cold outside, so even if it was summer it didn’t feel strange designing a cardigan for fall. In fact i couldn’t wait to get done to be able to start use it.

Now I look back at those cold summer days by the lake, a cup of coffee in my hands, a cosy cardigan wrapped around me and enjoying the calm around me.

About the Crochet Pattern

The Cherry Blossom Wrap Cardigan is your perfect garment to look elegant and comfortable all year round. You decide yourself how much you want to be able to wrap it by adjusting it to fit your body. The pattern guides you through how.

It is worked top down as a raglan and requires minimal sewing.

The use of DK weight yarn makes the cardigan elegant and portraits the details of the ribbing elegantly. The pattern is easy but the ribbing is more for an intermediate crocheter, however the pattern include an alternative ribbing to make it easier and fit also the more advanced beginner (and when you've made it all the way to the ribbing your skills are at the level that you can handle the more advanced ribbing as well. But you choose!).

Yarn Choice

I used a 100% Extrafine merino wool yarn: Super Soft by Lana Gatto. I think it would be great also to combine an alpaca or wool yarn with a strand of mohair.

Recommended Yarn: Super Soft by Lana Gatto or other DK / 8 ply / 11 wpi / 3-weight yarn.

My testers made excellent versions using these yarns:

  • Paintbox Yarns Simply DK

  • KC Knit and Crochet

  • Premiere Anti-Pilling DK

  • Drops Extrafine Merino

  • Nube Soft 2/7

  • Lion Brand Comfy Cotton Blend

Estimated Yarn usage: 1200 m / 1350 y - 2200 m / 2400 y
